Giving a Bed Bath

Another essential nursing skill is learning how to give a bed bath. I am convinced that many nursing skills are common sense once they are learned. Giving a bed bath is definitely one of those skills.  Once you have done it once or twice, you will be a master at it.  Giving bed baths is something that I don't mind do. It's nice to be able to do something for others that they cannot do for themselves. That is the art of nursing, isn't it?

I think one of the most important things with giving a bed bath is that you need to be prepared! Here is a list of supplies that I have when I enter the room:

  • 10-15 washcloths
  • 2 large towels (one to cover the patient while bathing (privacy) and the other to dry the patient)
  • Bath soap
  • Baby powder (some hospitals allow this and others do not)
  • A basin to fill up with water
  • A comb
  • 1-2 absorbent pads (chux pad)
  • Fitted sheet
  • Top sheet
  • Blanket
  • Gown
  • Linen bag

This is a demonstration of how to give a patient a bath while they are in bed.
